Pierce Announces Campaign for Mayor of Ypsilanti(Ypsilanti, Michigan—April 13, 2006) Steve Pierce, Ypsilanti businessman and entrepreneur, announced today that he is seeking election as the next Mayor of Ypsilanti. Pierce, a Southside resident, gathered signatures by going door to door in all three wards of the city and has filed the required signatures to be on the ballot for the August 8th, 2006 Democratic primary."We are facing a fiscal crisis with shrinking budgets," said Pierce. "The current city plan targets the most vulnerable residents in our community through cuts in senior programs, parks, special events, and bus service. At the same time, the city is proposing to raise new money through a city income tax." "An income tax will have a devastating effect on the community," said Pierce. "The City has been spending too much taxpayer money on consultants, the Water Street project, and expensive downtown beautification projects. The city should be focusing tax dollars on core services such as police, fire, streets, and parks. For other services, we need to develop a regional plan that saves taxpayer dollars by sharing resources. The success of YCUA and the District Library demonstrates that a regional approach will save money while still providing a high level of service to the community. As your mayor, I will work hard to build bridges and trust inside and outside the community to continue the services our community needs to maintain a good quality of life." Pierce, a long time community supporter, has been active in numerous neighborhood organizations, including the Historic Southside where he serves as communications liaison to the City and CoPAC. Pierce served on the Ypsilanti DDA Board for five years and was elected chair for two years. He was appointed by the Mayor to the Blue Ribbon Committee on City Finance. He currently serves as the treasurer of the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Smartzone. He is a member of the Ypsilanti Heritage Foundation, the Ypsilanti Historical Society where he serves as chair of the Endowment Committee, the Washtenaw Development Council, the Ypsilanti Chamber of Commerce, and the NAACP. www.VotePierce.com
